The Wet Tropics and Cape York are two of the most impressive Bioregions in Australia. The diversity of wildlife and plant life is just phenomenal. Until now, Eyes on Wildlife only accepted one booking each year to cover some bird and wildlife hotspots in the Cape York Bioregion, and these bookings were always specific target tours for the harder to find birds and mammals. For 2021 Patrick has put together an itinerary for a tour that will be run twice in 2021 to get guests the 15 endemic birds, and some of the most amazing mammals of the Wet Tropics combined with a trip to Lakefield NP and Iron Range NP.
We start in Cairns to make our way up to the Atherton Tablelands focusing on our 15 Wet Tropics endemic birds (IOC list) and most of our Wet Tropics endemic mammals in a full day, one night and a morning in the Wet Tropics. Of course, we'll see plenty of other birds, mammals and wildlife as you would on any other Eyes on Wildlife tour.
Lesser Sooty Owl
Some of the mammals we will target in the Atherton area are: Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo, Musky Rat-kangaroo, Red-legged Pademelon, Green Ringtail Possum, Herbert River Ringtail Possum, Lemuroid Ringtail Possum, Long-tailed Pygmy Possum, Broad-toed Feathertail Glider, Yellow-bellied Glider, Krefft's Glider, some of our bats and if you have never seen a Platypus, you will very likely see one on this tour.
Lemuroid Ringtail Possum
From the Atherton Tablelands we'll make our way to Iron Range NP via Lakefield NP. Target birds are Star Finch, Black-throated Finch, White-eared Masked Finch, the white-bellied race of Crimson Finch, Black-backed Butcherbird, Red Goshawk, Golden-shouldered Parrot, Yellow-legged Flycatcher, Green-backed Honeyeater, Paradise Riflebird, Trumpet Manucode, Frilled Monarch, Black-winged Monarch, Northern Scrub-robin, Black-eared Catbird, Palm Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, Red-cheeked Parrot, Marbled Frogmouth...to name 'a few'.
Three 3hr nocturnal sessions will have us target Common Spotted Cuscus, Southern Common Cuscus, Eastern Tube-nosed Bat, Eastern Horseshoe Bat, Bare-backed Fruit Bat, Cinnamon Antechinus, Blossom Bat, Cape York Melomys, and we might even see Rufous Spiny Bandicoot.
